As mentioned in the plot, Monotony has banished our characters to an Island that exists between worlds. They cannot leave the Island, nor can ordinary human beings travel there, except perhaps…
Well, in their imaginations. That’s the trouble, isn’t it? To make things even worse for Monotony, the characters themselves also have imaginations, and this forms a connection between them and their creators such that these characters will probably never be forgotten. Not by everyone, at least.
Curiously, there are buildings on the Island which the characters currently there couldn’t possibly have built in the amount of time they’ve been there. This is because the Island itself is fully capable of reconstructing entire cities. It can duplicate anything but people, and can generally provide for characters’ simple needs and wishes upon request.
However, this is not to say that it does so particularly well. If you go to an Island-constructed restaurant to order food, for instance, it may be able to magically provide a very adequate meal. However, if you want really good food, you’ll need a real cook. And unless there are waiters in that restaurant, you’re going to need to go get your food from the kitchen yourself.
The geography of the Island changes constantly. With each new person who arrives there, the Island grows a bit, adding land that resembles the newcomer’s idea of his or her homeland. If there are two or more people from the same place, the Island will try to accommodate all of them. If there’s already someone there from, say, modern-day New York City, and then a 19-century New Yorker is sent to the Island, the “New York” section of the Island will not only grow, but will also begin to incorporate 1800s architecture.
Besides this, the Island will occasionally make a mistake, especially if several characters arrive at once, and put some geographical or architectural feature of one area in the wrong place. It may also occur in the correct place, or it may not. Needless to say, this can make life on the Island a bit confusing.
Each time someone new shows up, the Island may also create one dwelling-place, or shop, or other type of building/structure for that person to own. This can be just about anything, including a pirate ship. (Note: you can obtain your place by PMing Maestro or Keraqui with its name and description, and they will make it for you.)
So far, pretty much everything on the Island is within walking distance. It would be entirely possible to get from Amsterdam to New Orleans in less than an hour. The abrupt climate changes inherent in that are likely to be rather disconcerting at first, though.
