Age: For the purposes of MFF, I'm going to RP Ariel (most of the time) around 18.
Species: Mermaid
Place of Origin: The Little Mermaid [Disney]
Appearance:
Ariel's got the body of a, well, swimmer--agile, strong, and lean. She's fairly porcelain, having spent most of her time underwater, but does have the subtly sun-kissed glow that is unusual for merfolk, because of the time she did spend above the surface. She's got brilliant red hair, wide, sea-blue eyes and an infectious grin as well as, when she's in the water, a sleek green tail. She's often adorned in a purple shell bra, and is possessing of that eerie, siren-like beauty; though she neither knows this nor very often consciously uses it to her advantage, unlike many other mermaids might.
Personality:
Ariel is bubbly, happy, curious, adventurous, and stubborn, as well as, understandably, slightly unpredictable. She's instant friends with nearly anyone she meets, and is very trusting. It takes an open display of dishonesty or villainy to make Ariel dislike you and, even then, most of the time, she tries very hard to see the good in people. She believes that a person can do bad and still mean good, but there are, even for her, a select few (including Ursula) who are too far gone.
Ariel is also very loyal. If you mean a lot to her, she will, without so much as a second thought, give herself to save you; in fact, she is so opposed to the thought of anyone dying that she may even risk her life for you if she doesn't even know you very well. Partially because of this, however, she requires a good deal of supporters because, without them, Ariel is prone to getting herself in precarious situations very quickly. Not only this, but Ariel can't stand to be alone. She's very affectionate; and she always needs someone to love as well as someone to love her. That's probably one of her most vulnerable characteristics: show her any form of affection, and she's immediately putty in your hands (unless, of course, she knows you well enough to see through it).
This is not to say she isn't stubborn or strong-willed. Ariel knows what she wants and she gets it: and no one can talk her out of it, bad though an idea might be. She's also very good at getting her way. Most often she's stubborn to the point that arguing would be futile, but sometimes, when the situation calls for it, she'll turn on the charm. She's also surprisingly sarcastic for her orgins, and doesn't believe in anything as silly as chickening out or taking the easy route. Life is short, she believes, so why not live it up?
History:
Ariel was born into a world that she fit into very well: a world of music and laughter and sunshine. Her mother sang to her and her sisters each night before they went to bed, and their father played with them each day in the lagoon. It was a sort of timeless life, always with something to do. Every day was a new adventure.
Until the day her mother was lost.
The air was filled with laughs and splashes, just as it always was, but, when her father tossed her up in the air, an ominous streak of black caught in her peripheral vision. She sucked in air, fell to her father's arms and stayed their, frightened. What had that been? The rest of the merfolk in the lagoon, sensitive to the princess' fear, spun to look: a ship! And worse.
Pirates.
"GO!" Triton yelled, grabbing as many of his girls as he could and dashing down into the ocean. "Swim home, girls! Quickly!" Attina grabbed Adella and Arista and started toward the castle, the rest following their elder sister. The rest... save Ariel.
"Daddy--?" Began the curious, if frightened, girl, and her father spun to her, rage apparent on his face.
"GO, Ariel!" His queen was still up there!
Ariel floated down but refused to leave, watching the surface with fearful eyes.
"Athena!" Shouted her father, desperately swimming toward the surface. Ariel followed, anxiously staying close to him as ominous-looking hooks grazed the surface of the water. "Athena--NO!"
She and her father both froze as ship collided with rock, and a green tail went limp...
From that moment on, nothing was the same.
Her father, heartbroken, banned music, the thought of it hurting him only all the more, and the kingdom mourned. Ariel, too, was lost. Her mother was gone, taken in the unfortunate accident that made her father despise humans. Only forgetting eased the pain. Ariel tried not to remember the song that was no longer sung to them each night, the brush of soft hands tucking her into bed. Pain eased as time went on, and Ariel soon overcame the difficult memory. Her mother was gone... but that didn't mean she couldn't still live.
Her father didn't seem to agree.
It was the same every morning: their governess woke them up, they went for a walk, they mulled about the castle doing nothing. Ten years of that: and the young princess was starting to get a little restless. What happened to that feeling of adventure she'd so loved years ago? Where had the spirit gone? But her father found comfort in routine and, for the first time, his youngest rebelled. The two'd always shared a very special bond (yes, Ariel was a Daddy's girl), and so it hurt the both of them to argue. She asked to skip the morning walk, that was all. And her father couldn't take that much.
Long story short: she met Flounder, who took her to an underground club, with music, and dancing, and... Sebastian?
Things became very clear to Ariel: no matter what, she had to bring this happiness back to the kingdom.
To her father.
Lots of dancing, an aggravated governess, and a few mishaps later, she finally did it. In the end, her father knew Ariel was right. Music belonged in the kingdom as much as their mother had.
Shortly thereafter, the rebellious princess found the one other thing his father clung to; his bitterness of humans. She remembered what had happened, that much was true, but the girl set out to, yet again, prove her father wrong. They couldn't be all bad! Even pirates.
And then she fell in love.
Or... she thought she did, anyway. He was tall and sleek and mysterious and so beautiful... and he was almost lost to her in a stike of lightning. Fire dancing on the water, Ariel committed the one action her father couldn't forgive: she saved his life.
And she wasn't sorry.
She sang, in that mesmerizing voice of hers, how much she wanted to stay with him, to be part of his world. But he woke and the girl who had saved him was quickly chased off by Max.
The two thought of nothing but each other: so, when her father found out and destroyed all her beautiful human treasures, her whole grotto, there was only one choice to make. She had to find him. And there was only one person who could help her do that. The mermaid visited the sea witch, believing her tales of repentance and her falsified desire to help. And so she gave her voice for her man.
Three days.
If he had known it was her, he would have married her right away; but he didn't, and, without her voice, how could he know? Still, he was torn. He was falling for this red-haired beauty before him when he'd already given his heart to the woman who saved him. Who should he be faithful to?
But Ariel was determined. She flirted, she explored, she, with that unimaginable look of total wonder, was amazed by this so forbidden world. And she tried not to thing of her father.
But it all shattered when Vanessa came, with her voice, claiming to be the woman Eric had been looking for all along. All it took was the correct usage of that siren voice, the way Ariel'd never been cruel enough to use it, and he was lost to the girl forever.
But not if Scuttle, Sebastian, and Flounder had anything to do with it.
They quickly informed the girl that it was not a beautiful woman on that ship but, in reality, Ursula. Ariel, legs or no legs, swam out to the wedding ship to save her prince: ruining the sea witches plans but also falling quite neatly into her clutches. Ursula dragged her down to the ocean floor once she had her legs and her voice back and traded her for her much more valuable father: and his trident.
Luckily, Eric saved all of them with the same motion that had taken her mother from her so many years ago. King Triton realized that men had as much capacity to be good as to be bad and, though reluctantly, gave his daughter to the man who had saved them all.
Funny, how one girl could so completely change the future of a kingdom. The time had finally come again, the time in which merfolk could sit in a lagoon, sing, and find a new adventure every day.

Ariel peeked over the broken mast of the ship, eyes wide. What could this be? Sure, she'd seen ships before, but never so intact as the one a few lengths in front of the one she currently floated above. The swim had been long (Flounder being a guppy the whole way), but the redhead was thoroughly thrilled.
Speaking of, the whining voice came from behind her.
"Ariel! Wait for me!"
The redhead rolled her eyes, spinning back to eye Flounder, exasperated.
"Flounder! Hurry up!" She was whispering, albeit loudly, because of how forbidden it all was. Boy, if her father knew she was leagues from home, exploring the remains of a human ship...
She held back the smirk, choosing instead to peer curiously back at the wreckage, eyes wide and smile lingering infectiously on her lips. Ohhh, think of all the great human stuff she'd find here!
"You know I can't swim that fast..." trailed her best friend, finally catching up. Ariel paid no mind to the words; cutting him off with a little gasp of breath, eyes brimmed with wonder.
"There is is..." She pointed, and the fish followed her finger hesitantly. He wasn't all that fond of Ariel's adventures. A ray of light illuminated the ship, promising great and wondrous things. "Isn't it fantastic?"
"Yeah. S-sure. It's... great." Flounder paused, expression very clearly showing his desire to get as far away from that ghostly-looking human contraption as possible. "Now let's get outta here?"
Ariel turned, catching Flounder's fins before he could successfully get away, dragging him towards the ship.
"You're not getting cold fins now, are you?" She shot, half-teasing. Honestly, where was his sense of adventure? With what a scaredy-fish Flounder was, you'd think they hadn't been fast friends since they danced at an underground club in their younger days.
"Who, me?" He muttered anxiously, hanging behind and trying to make himself sound brave, "No way. It's just, it, uh... it looks damp in there. Yeah! I-I think I may be coming down with something."
Ariel had swum up to the hull and was peering, upside-down, into the porthole, paying him no attention. She couldn't see much--lots of rubble--how long was it going to take him?
"Yeah, I've got this cough." He coughed for emphasis, and the girl looked up at him, smirking, one brow raised. Cough, huh?
Two could play that game.
Her face lifted into coy acceptance.
"Alright," she swam around to eye him, tossing a hand at her friend, now right side up, "I'm going inside. You can just stay here and... watch for sharks." She smirked again, brows knitting. Hah. See what he did now. She, before Flounder had a chance to respond, shimmied through the porthole and into the dimly-lit ship, looking around, excited.
"What?" She heard suddenly, from outside. Ariel pressed a hand to her mouth, stifling a giggle and swimming forward to examine the glass casing that dotted some of the walls, pressing her fingers to it curiously, "SHARKS?? ARIEL! Ariel, I can't--I mean--Ariel, help!"
Ariel spun to find Flounder desperately trying to get through the small hole, wiggling with a frightened expression on his face. She giggled, swimming up to him and pressing a hand to her cheek.
"Oh, Flounder..." What was she going to to with him?
"Ariel," he whispered, as the girl proceeded to yank with all her strength on his fins. Boy, he certainly was getting to be quite the big fish, wasn't he? "do you really think there might be sharks around here?"
Ariel rolled her eyes, releasing a fin to put a hand on her hips after tossing a stubborn red wave out of her eyes.
"Flounder, don't be such a guppy."
"I'm not a guppy..." He pouted, as Ariel resumed her yanking on his fins, finally getting the fish through the porthole. She spun, and, with Flounder hesitantly following, turned to find adventure.
