Name: Miles Tuck
Age: 22, though he hasn't aged since 1827
Species: Immortal Human
Place of Origin (what movie or story did they come from?): Tuck Everlasting
Appearance: Miles has a very down to earth look about him. He's not one to strive to look his best, mainly because he feels there's no one he needs to look his best for. He wears simple clothes that are comfortable for him. He's got short brown hair and only shaves every couple of weeks, (unless there's a war going on and he can join the military) so his beard and mustache lightly dust his face. His eyes are blue, and if eyes are truly the windows to the soul, then his are sealed shut with the blinds down. To the average person who comes across him, Miles is a very hard and bitter man. Only his family and one person outside of it knows the reason behind it.
Personality: Before he and his family drank from the spring, Miles was a good man. He worked hard, as times in the 1800s called for. He helped his family settle in a new area, and soon after that, he gave his heart to a very special woman, and through their love, helped bring two wonderful children into the world.
Soon afterwards, however, Miles became hard, and closed himself off from those close to him. He went looking for wars to fight, no matter who the fight was against. If there were no wars, then he would start fights himself. He refuses to trust anyone, and that doesn't just mean he's not willing to trust anyone with his secret. He treats everyone he first meets as an enemy, regardless of who they are, what they look like, or how old they are.
That isn't to say that the man he was before is completely gone. Miles is still capable of love, and as long as someone he meets is as stubborn as he is, they'll find that it's actually pretty easy to get a crack going in the walls he's built.
History: Miles was born in Tennessee in 1805 to Angus and Mae Tuck. Five years later, his little brother Jesse was born. Times were hard in those days, but Miles and his family were always happy with what they had.
The years rolled by, and it came time for the family to journey up north to see what else life had in store for them. They packed up their belongings and strapped them to a cart pulled by Mae's horse, Travis. The family brought the cat along with them, and soon their journey brought them to Maryland. As they wandered through the woods, they came across a spring right by one of the bigger trees. The family was thirsty, and they all stopped to take a drink. The water, they all agreed, tasted like Heaven. Even the horse enjoyed it, but the cat showed no interest in drinking. The family continued on for a short distance until they found a field outside the woods, perfect for building a house and a small shed for him and Jesse.
Other families came to live in the same lands. One day, Miles met a beautiful young woman who immediately captured his heart. Her name was Clara, and it wasn't long before Miles had gone to her father to ask for her hand. He and Clara were married, and as time went on, she had given him a daughter, who they'd named Anna, and a few years later, a son named Bo.
During all of this, however, strange things were happening to the Tucks. Jesse had fallen from a tree while he was thirty feet up. Mae barely had time to scream before he was up on his feet with no signs of any injuries. And then a group of hunters mistook Travis for a deer, but their bullets didn't kill him. Tuck got bit by a rattlesnake, and nothing happened, he didn't even get sick. The family was concerned about these odd events, and it wasn't until Tuck took a shotgun, aimed it at himself and fired did they realize the truth: The spring had made it so nothing could harm them, be it physical injuries or illnesses. The four of them knew that it would be best to keep this a secret.
However, that was easier said than done. Clara realized that Miles hadn't aged a day at all in the ten years she'd known him. Neither had his brother, or his parents. Miles confessed to her the truth about the spring and begged her to come with him and find it. He wanted her and his children to drink from it, so that they could be together forever.
Clara reacted with anger, accusing Miles of selling his soul to the devil. She left him, and took Anna and Bo with her. It wasn't long after that the rest of the people realized something about the Tucks wasn't natural, and believed the family was practicing black magic and witchcraft.
Miles took the loss of his wife and children hard. He knew that Clara would have nothing to do with him, but he still looked out for her and his children while he was in hiding. He never spoke to them or let himself be seen.
His pain continued to grow as his little Anna died of influenza at fourteen. If only Clara had believed him, she never would have suffered like that. Desperate for a way to ease his pain, and desperate to die, Miles started looking for ways. Due to the fact the Tucks were in hiding, he was no where near his brother and parents. Miles started to frequent bars where no one knew his name, starting fights. He'd gotten hit hard by many people, but never hard enough to leave a mark. The years dragged on, and there was talk of the South seceding from the North. Miles joined the Confederacy as he thought they'd be the ones who'd fight the hardest. He was in fierce battles and had witnessed countless men die. But not him. The war ended, and he was still alive.
It was in the Civil War that Miles found the body of Bo, who'd joined the Union only to meet his own end. Miles desperately tried to find Clara, only to find out that after Bo's death, she'd told everyone she knew about Miles and what he'd told her about the spring. She'd been committed to an insane asylum. Not long after that, she died, too.
Years continued to drag on. Life around continued to grow and flourish, but Miles didn't take the time to notice or care. He hated his immortality, and wished with all that he had that it'd be gone.
In the year 1914, it was time again for Miles to rejoin his family. Jesse found him first, and told him about all the places he'd gone to see. They found Mae, and Miles' smile could not reach his eyes. Mae told him he was as cozy as barbed wire.
He tried to keep his spirits up, but too much was on his mind. Another war was brewing, and he intended to join the army again to fight the Huns. On top of that, he had a strong suspicion that someone had been following him and Jesse. They'd seen a man in a yellow suit several times, and every time they thought they'd lost him, he'd turned up again.
Adding to it, Miles and Jesse came across a young girl who'd discovered the spring. Miles grabbed her and put her on Travis, racing through the woods to their home. Furious with Jesse for letting her near the spring, Miles insisted that the girl Winnie Foster could not be trusted.
Ironically, it was Miles who decided to tell Winnie the truth about them. It was the first time since Clara that he'd ever admitted to the changelessness that had affected his family. He cried as he told her of the deaths of his wife and children, while he was still alive.
After this, a small crack had started in the walls that Miles had built. It was clear to him that Winnie and Jesse had fallen in love, and while he knew it wasn't the life for Winnie, compassion for his brother was shown.
The Tucks had to leave again, but as they were packing their belongings once more, the Man in the Yellow Suit appeared. He told them that he knew of their secret after hearing stories about them from his grandmother, who worked at the asylum Clara was in. He told the Tucks that he wanted to know where the spring was, and that he'd intended to sell the water to those who deserved it. When Tuck refused, the man seized Winnie and held a gun to her head. Mae crept behind him with the shotgun and hit his head with the barrel, causing him to hit the ground.
Miles heard the sounds of dogs and hoof beats, and knew that the police who'd been called to find Winnie were closing in on them. He and Jesse escaped on Travis, and Tuck managed to get away too, but Mae was arrested. They stayed close to town, but to their horror, Mae was on her way to the gallows, as the Man in the Yellow Suit had died due to her strike. If Mae was hung in the gallows, she wouldn't die, and the secret would be out to the entire town.
They called on Winnie to help them. Miles and Tuck were able to lift the iron bars of Mae's cell and help her out, and Winnie climbed into the cell in her place to buy them the time they needed, but not before saying her goodbyes to the Tucks. Miles left the town wondering if Winnie would listen to Jesse who had told her to drink from the spring once things had settled down, and that he'd be back for her. If she did, that was her choice. Miles owed her his trust, because at the very least, he knew that she would keep their secret.
Now, Miles still hasn't changed much. He continues to fight people in bars when he can't find a war to join. He still longs for a way to end his immortality, even though it's proved to be impossible so many times he'd eventually stopped counting. He's a drifter, only seeing his family once every ten years. The pain of losing Clara, Anna, and Bo still eats at him, and all he wants to do is find some way to ease that pain.
Strengths/Abilities: Strong, good horseman, a good man once he lets his guard down enough to trust someone, still capable of love, cannot get hurt, sick, or die.
Weaknesses/Flaws: Short tempered, untrusting, looks for excuses to fight
Likes: Travis the horse, being with his family, (more or less) card games, fighting
Dislikes: Being immortal, being accused of witchcraft or selling soul to devil, the Man in the Yellow Suit, people finding the spring
Fears: Never dying.
RP Sample: The night was quiet, and through the trees, Miles could see the moon shining brightly along the stars. The beauty and tranquility of the night however, did nothing for him. Tears were still falling from his eyes, even after Jesse and Winnie had fallen asleep.
It'd been a long time since he'd talked about how he lost Clara and his babies. He'd only ever told Mae and Tuck, Jesse never knew. Obviously he'd known that they all died, but Miles never told him the reason why she left.
He hated his immortality. It was the cause of all his pain. It was the reason why Clara walked away from him, taking Anna and Bo with her. All he wanted was to die himself, so that he could be with them again, but no matter how he'd tried... he couldn't die. In the years since he'd lost them, he'd been beaten, shot, even within the range of a cannon blast that killed the ten other men who'd been standing right beside him. The blast sent him flying back several feet, landing in a heap on the ground, but the others were gone. But he just... kept on living.
Not that he could call this living... Tuck said it once, and he had a hunch that he'd be saying it again to Winnie. They didn't live, they were just stones in a river, just watching life continue to flow by while they were stuck at the bottom.
"I still love you, Clara..." Miles whispered to the night sky as he brushed at his tears, trying to stop crying. He just wanted the pain to stop. Despite the fact that she'd said he sold his soul to the devil, Miles could never bring himself to hate her for it. "I still love you..."
